Mayor Thomas Hoye is a lifelong Taunton resident and a longtime public servant. Prior to becoming the city’s mayor, Tom proudly served on the Taunton Municipal Council for 10 years. From a young age, his family helped him foster a love for the city that has carried over into his work today. Tom has a Master’s Degree in Education from Fitchburg State College, and Bachelor's’ degree from Bridgewater State. Prior to being elected he worked at Morton Hospital as a Certified Athletic Trainer, and taught in the Taunton Public Schools.
Through his passion for education and his firsthand experience of our district, Mayor Hoye has played an active role in working with the School Administration and School Committee to significantly lower dropout rates and increase graduation rates. Mayor Hoye knows that healthy school environments contribute to a successful learning experience, and has worked closely with the Massachusetts School Building Authority to help give all of Taunton’s students the best learning atmospheres.
As a small business owner, Tom understands others’ concerns, and as Mayor he vowed to streamline the permitting process. The city now offers online permitting and specialized programs to make opening a business more navigable. Under his leadership, the city has attracted many large economic partners, including Martignetti Liquors, the Boston Globe, Burke Oil, and Sullivan Tire.
Mayor Hoye’s economic efforts have boosted the city’s bond rating, making it more attractive to potential investors. He has worked diligently to clean up blighted properties, and has made substantial infrastructure upgrades throughout the city.
Improving public safety is also a major priority, and the Hoye Administration works aggressively to apply for many state, federal, and external funding opportunities. In the last several years the city has received two SAFER grants making it possible to hire 16 additional firefighters, and has hired 10 new police patrolmen.
When the Opiate Crisis gripped the nation becoming a national epidemic, the Mayor was one of the first elected officials to speak out publically on the difficulty of this issue. Hoye has been recognized on the state and national level for forming the city’s hundred-member Opiate Task Force, leading the way to improved drug abuse prevention and education programs in this city and gave families a voice in dealing with this issue.
Mayor Hoye knows that a strong community is a united community, and works hard to build fun, family-friendly city events. He created the Miles with the Mayor 5K, implemented the Kids’ Track Series and secured a Mass in Motion Grant from the Department of Public Health. Mayor Hoye also secured enough private funding to allow for the enormous expansion and revitalization of events like Family 4th Night and the December Lighting of the Green. The hundreds of thousands of dollars that these events’ committees raised helped to attract tens of thousands of visitors to the heart of the city, without adversely affecting the city’s valuable budget.
In addition to being Mayor, Tom is a devoted husband and loving father of three. His wife, Stephanie, is an Elementary School Principal and a life-long Tauntonian. Together they have three children: Sophia, Tommy and Lilah.
